Meniscal Tear

Meniscal Tear

A meniscal tear is one of the most common knee injuries and occurs when the meniscus, a C-shaped piece of cartilage that cushions and stabilizes the knee joint, becomes damaged. Each knee contains two menisci that help distribute weight, absorb shock, and support smooth joint movement. Meniscal tears can occur suddenly during sports activities or develop gradually due to age-related degeneration. At Park Hospitals, advanced orthopedic services, specialized diagnostic facilities, and comprehensive sports injury care programs support the early diagnosis and effective treatment of meniscal tears to help restore knee function and mobility.

Meniscal tears frequently result from sudden twisting movements of the knee, especially during sports that involve rapid changes in direction. In older adults, degeneration of the cartilage due to aging can increase susceptibility to tears even during routine activities. Additional risk factors include obesity, previous knee injuries, and repetitive stress on the knee joint.

Symptoms commonly include knee pain, swelling, stiffness, difficulty bending or straightening the knee, a sensation of the knee locking or catching, and reduced mobility. Some individuals may also experience instability or difficulty bearing weight on the affected leg.

If left untreated, a meniscal tear can lead to chronic pain, recurrent swelling, reduced joint function, and an increased risk of knee osteoarthritis. Early evaluation is important to preserve joint health and prevent long-term complications.

Diagnosis typically involves a detailed orthopedic examination along with imaging studies such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which helps assess the location and severity of the tear. Additional investigations may be performed to evaluate associated knee injuries.

Treatment depends on the size, location, and severity of the tear. Management may include rest, physical therapy, pain-relieving medications, activity modification, and rehabilitation exercises. In cases where symptoms persist or the tear is severe, arthroscopic surgery may be recommended to repair or remove damaged tissue.

With experienced orthopedic specialists, advanced imaging technology, and comprehensive rehabilitation services, Park Hospitals provides personalized treatment and long-term management for individuals with meniscal tears. Early diagnosis and timely intervention can help restore mobility, reduce pain, and support better long-term joint health.
