Sepsis

Sepsis is a life-threatening medical condition that occurs when the body's response to an infection becomes dysregulated, leading to widespread inflammation, tissue damage, and organ dysfunction. Rather than being caused directly by the infection itself, sepsis results from an overwhelming immune response that can affect multiple organ systems. It is considered a medical emergency that requires immediate diagnosis and treatment. At Park Hospitals, advanced emergency medicine services, specialized critical care facilities, and multidisciplinary medical teams support the rapid diagnosis and comprehensive management of sepsis to improve survival and recovery outcomes.

Sepsis can develop from almost any type of infection, including bacterial, viral, fungal, or parasitic infections. Common sources include infections of the lungs, urinary tract, abdomen, skin, and bloodstream. Individuals with weakened immune systems, chronic illnesses, diabetes, cancer, advanced age, or recent surgery may be at a higher risk of developing sepsis.

Symptoms can progress rapidly and may include fever or abnormally low body temperature, rapid heart rate, fast breathing, confusion, extreme weakness, low blood pressure, reduced urine output, and difficulty breathing. As sepsis worsens, signs of organ dysfunction may become more apparent and require urgent medical intervention.

If left untreated, sepsis can progress to septic shock, a severe form of the condition characterized by dangerously low blood pressure and multiple organ failure. This can result in permanent organ damage, prolonged hospitalization, and death.

Diagnosis typically involves a comprehensive clinical evaluation along with blood tests, cultures to identify the source of infection, imaging studies, and continuous monitoring of vital signs and organ function. Early recognition is critical for successful treatment.

Treatment focuses on controlling the infection, stabilizing organ function, and preventing complications. Management may include intravenous antibiotics, fluid resuscitation, oxygen therapy, medications to support blood pressure, intensive care monitoring, and treatment of the underlying source of infection.

With experienced critical care specialists, emergency physicians, advanced diagnostic technology, and comprehensive intensive care services, Park Hospitals provides personalized treatment and ongoing support for patients with sepsis. Early diagnosis and immediate intervention can significantly improve survival, reduce complications, and support better long-term recovery outcomes.
