There are many types of liver diseases that can attack your body with the consumption of unhygienic and bad food regularly.

There are many stages of liver failure. The expert doctors can describe the condition of your liver after tests, screenings, and early symptoms of liver disease. Some of the liver failures may need liver dialysis procedures.

Liver dialysis is performed to buy time for people with acute liver failure. Later on, the liver transplant can be done or the liver can be treated surgically.

Liver dialysis is a completely different process than that of kidney dialysis. Liver dialysis is a kind of detoxification process that removes toxins stuck in albumin. Whereas, kidney dialysis is performed in the case of kidney failure and primarily removes water-soluble toxins.

Like a bioartificial liver device, liver dialysis is also a form of the artificial extracorporeal liver support device.

Types of Liver Dialysis

There are several liver dialysis devices that have been invented to artificially detoxify the liver. The Molecular Adsorbent Recirculating System (MARS), Single Pass Albumin Dialysis (SPAD), and Prometheus are the most common among different types of liver dialysis treatments.

Molecular Adsorbents Recirculation System (MARS)

Developed by Teraklin AG of Germany about 10 years ago, MARS is known as the best extracorporeal liver dialysis system in the medical world. Two separate dialysis circuits are used in the MARS blood purification system. MARS is a widely used liver dialysis technique but rarely used in developing countries due to its complicated technique and high cost.

Single Pass Albumin Dialysis (SPAD)

SPAD is a simple albumin dialysis technique as it uses standard renal replacement therapy machines without the interruption of additional perfusion pump systems like MARS.

Prometheus

Prometheus is a newly introduced liver dialysis technique in which albumin-bound substances are removed from the blood by using a special absorber. Simultaneously, high-flux hemodialysis is performed.

Which one is best?

The Molecular Adsorbents Recirculation System (MARS) is the best known extracorporeal liver dialysis system and highly preferred by the doctors.

Who needs MARS?

The doctors look at the following factors before performing MARS in liver patients:

  • The current condition of the liver
  • Chances of curability
  • Cause of liver dysfunction

Conclusion

The MARS system may keep a person alive until the time he gets a liver transplant or other treatment. The MARS systems are supposed to detoxify blood only.

One of the best liver and kidney transplant hospitals in India, Park hospital offers the latest technology-equipped liver dialysis for patients. Park hospital in Gurgaon works with a well-experienced team of doctors that handles all the acute and severe liver failure cases smartly.
