Obstetrics and gynaecology are two branches of medicine that focus on different aspects of women’s health. Obstetrics is the branch of medicine that deals with pregnancy, childbirth and the postnatal period. Gynaecology is the branch of medicine that deals with the health of the female reproductive system, including the ovaries, uterus, cervix and vagina.

Both obstetrics and gynaecology are important for ensuring the health of women during all stages of their lives. During pregnancy, obstetricians provide care for both the mother and the unborn child. They monitor the progress of the pregnancy, provide advice on nutrition and exercise, and offer support during labour and delivery. After delivery, they provide care for the mother and baby during the postnatal period.

Gynaecologists provide care for women who are not pregnant as well as those who are. They offer advice on contraception, sexual health, menopause and other health issues affecting women. They also provide screenings for conditions such as cervical cancer.

If you have any concerns about your reproductive health, Park Hospital is here to assist you. Doctors at our Obstetrics & Gynaecology Hospital can help you to maintain a healthy reproductive system and ensure that you have a healthy pregnancy and delivery.

What is an OB-GYN?

An obstetrician–gynaecologist, also called an ob-gyn, is a physician who specializes in obstetrics and gynecology. These two surgical–medical specialties are often combined to provide care for the female reproductive system at all stages of life.

As a woman’s health care provider, an OB-GYN offers comprehensive medical care for women of all ages. This includes preventive measures, screening tests, family planning counseling, and treatment of various conditions and problems. Pregnancy and childbirth are major focus areas of OB-GYN care, but these specialists also provide care throughout a woman’s lifetime for issues related to her reproductive health.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN OBSTETRICS AND GYNECOLOGY?

Obstetrics and Gynaecology are two different fields of medicine. Obstetrics is the branch of medicine that deals with pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. Gynaecology is the branch of medicine that deals with the health of the female reproductive system, including the ovaries, uterus, cervix, and vagina.

There are many differences between obstetrics and gynaecology. One difference is that obstetricians focus on pregnancy and delivery, while gynaecologists focus on the overall health of the female reproductive system. Another difference is that obstetricians typically see patients who are pregnant or trying to become pregnant, while gynaecologists typically see patients who are not pregnant.

Additionally, obstetricians often provide care for women during their pregnancies, while gynaecologists generally do not.

What procedures can they perform?

Obstetricians and gynaecologists are trained to perform a wide range of procedures. These include:

1. Diagnostic procedures such as ultrasounds, laparoscopies and hysteroscopies

2. Surgery, including caesarean sections, hysterectomies and surgeries for prolapse or heavy bleeding

3. Management of high-risk pregnancies.

Treatment of disorders of the female reproductive system, such as endometriosis or fibroids

1. Screening for cancer, including cervical screening (Pap smear)

2. Family planning and contraception advice, including fitting IUDs (intrauterine devices)

3. Insertion/removal of an intrauterine contraceptive device (IUCD)

4. Diagnosis and treatment of infertility issues

5. Treatment of menopause symptoms

When should someone see an OB-GYN?

It depends on each individual's personal health and medical history. However, there are some general guidelines that can be followed. For example, the Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommend that all women have a yearly wellness visit with an OB-GYN starting at age 21. This visit can include a Pap smear, breast exam, and discussion of any health concerns or questions the woman may have.

Additionally, they recommend that women between the ages of 21 and 29 get a Pap smear every three years, while women over the age of 30 can get one every five years if they have had three consecutive normal test results. Other times when it may be necessary to see an OB-GYN include when you are planning to become pregnant, are experiencing unusual bleeding or pain in the pelvic area, or have concerns about your sexual health.

Obstetrics and Gynaecology: Condition & Treatments

Obstetrics and Gynaecology are the medical and surgical specialties that focus on the research and treatment of female reproductive system disorders. The field of Obstetrics & Gynaecology covers a wide range of conditions, from fertility problems and menstrual disorders to cancers of the reproductive organs.

Some common conditions that Obstetricians & Gynaecologists treat include:

Endometriosis:

This is a condition where the tissue that lines the uterus grows outside of the uterus, causing pain and bleeding. Endometriosis is treated with medication, surgery, or a combination of both.

Fibroids:

These are non-cancerous growths that develop in or around the uterus. Fibroids can cause pain, bleeding, and other symptoms. Treatment options include medication, surgery, or a combination of both.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS):

This is a hormonal disorder that can cause irregular periods, excess hair growth, acne, and weight gain. PCOS is treated with medication, lifestyle changes, or a combination of both.

Pregnancy:

Pregnancy is a normal condition that requires specialised care from an Obstetrician & Gynaecologist. Common pregnancy complications include gestational diabetes, pre-eclampsia, and premature labour.
