Gynecology Oncology

Gynecologic oncology focuses on cancers of the female reproductive system, including ovarian, uterine, vaginal, cervical, and vulvar cancers. These specialists are highly trained to diagnose and treat these cancers.

The following are the five most common kinds of gynaecologic cancer:

Cervical cancer: Cancer begins in the cervix
Ovarian cancer: Develops in the ovaries
Uterine cancer: Cancer begins in the uterus
Vaginal cancer: Develops in the vagina, the hollow, tube-like channel that connects the uterus's bottom to the exterior of the body.
Vulvar cancer: Develops in the vulva, the outside portion of the female genital organ that comprises the inner and outer lips of the vagina, the clitoris, the aperture of the vagina, and its glands.

Signs and Symptoms

Signs and symptoms differ from person to person, and each gynecologic cancer has its unique set of signs and symptoms. But some common warning signs are:

  • Unusual Vaginal bleeding or Discharge
  • Eating disorders
  • Pelvic discomfort or pressure
  • Urge to urinate frequently or urgently, as well as constipation
  • Bloating
  • Back or abdominal discomfort
  • Vulva itch, burning, discomfort, or tenderness
  • Changes in the colour or texture of the vulva, such as a rash, lesions, or warts

Consultation is recommended if these symptoms last longer than two weeks. The occurrence of these symptoms could be other than cancer but it’s important to get checked to prevent the risk.

Risk Factors

The risk for gynaecological cancer is the same for every female, however, some factors that contribute to this risk are:-

  • Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infections that do not resolve raise the chance of developing a variety of gynecologic malignancies.
  • There is a family history of cancer.
  • Aging
