There are several types of cancers that develop in different parts of the body and disrupt its normal functioning. Today, let’s talk about Sarcoma Cancer!

What is Sarcoma Cancer?

Sarcoma is a rare kind of cancer. It is different from the other, more common types of cancers because it develops from a different kind of tissue, i.e. the connective tissue. These tissues comprise the cells that connect or support other kinds of tissues in the body.

It is commonly found in the bones, muscles, tendons, cartilage, nerves, fat, and blood vessels of the arms and legs but can also be found in other areas like the head, neck, etc. –

  • 60% begin in an arm or leg
  • 30% start in the torso or abdomen
  • 10% occur in the head or neck

Although there are more than 50 types of Sarcoma, they can be grouped into two main kinds –

  • Soft-tissue Sarcoma
  • Bone Sarcoma

Both children and adults can develop a Sarcoma but it accounts for only about 1% of all adult cancers. However, Sarcomas represent about 15% of all childhood cancers.

What causes Sarcoma?

The risk factors that lead to Sarcoma are yet vague, but there are a few certainties like:

  • Family history of Sarcoma
  • One’s own history of a bone disorder, Paget’s disease
  • A genetic disorder like neurofibromatosis, Gardener Syndrome

Are there some symptoms of it?

Soft-tissue Sarcomas are hard to spot, as they can grow anywhere in the body. Most often, the first sign is a painless lump but as it gets bigger, it might press nerves or muscles leading to uneasiness. Whereas, Bone Sarcoma can show up timely with symptoms like:

  • On and off pain in the affected bone that might get worse at night
  • Swelling that may start weeks after the pain
  • A limp

What can be the Sarcoma Cancer Treatment?

The Sarcoma Cancer treatment depends on the type of it, its place in the body, to what extent is it developed, and whether or not it has spread to other parts of the body.

As a part of Sarcoma treatment, your doctor may advise you to carry out medical examinations like:

  • A sample of cells from the tumor, biopsy
  • Imaging tests like Ultrasound, CT Scan, or MRI
  • A scan of the bone
